I brought my trusty EEE with me to check email on "borrowed" wifi whenever we ventured into a town. Finding a place to charge the EEE was always an annoyance and I kept thinking a solar panel would be a gread accessory. Well I did some searching and found one that works perfectly for charging in the wilderness.

It is available for purchase on ebay and even comes with the correct tip for the EEE along with many extra tips for your cellphones or other low power devices.

Here is a picture of an EEE happily charging using this panel.

This panel only provides 5 watts on optimal sunlight so while it will charge the EEE it will not let you use the EEE and charge it at the same time. So turn it off stick it out by your tent for the day and you'll come back to a full battery.

Panel closeup:

Asus EEE pc BIOS update download

Here are the most recent bios updates for the 2g 4G and 8G eee pcs. The folks over at eeeusers have already compiled a nice guide for updating the bios so I'll just link to theirs instead of creating my own. Downloads below.

EEE pc 2G BIOS version 0129 (download)
EEE pc 4G BIOS version 0401 (download)
EEE pc 4G BIOS version 0703 (download) Newest
EEE pc 8G BIOS version 0404 (download)

http://wiki.eeeuser.com/howto:updatebios <- Link to update guide.

Below is the 8804 bios for the 701 model EEE pc, you can look at the bottom of your EEE for "Asus 701" to confirm you have this model. The main benefit of running this older version of the bios is that it allows you to run the CPU at the full 900 mhz without using overclocking software. However some people have reported they get wavy lines on their screen using this bios, if you do get these lines it is easily fixed by reverting to another bios version.

EEE pc any 701 model BIOS version 8804 (download)

Asus EEE pc Driver Download Windows XP

The files below are copies of the Windows XP driver software for the EEE pc taken from the DVD that came with my EEE pc 4G. These drivers also work for the 2G and 8G models. I should have made this post awhile ago but it's better late than never. I've posted each driver separately because their combined size is over 100 mb and that is a large file to download when you may only need one or two of the drivers. One more thing to remember is that you should install the acpi and chipset drivers before the others (audio especially).

ACPI (download)
AUDIO (download)
CHIPSET (download)
LAN (download)
MODEM (download)
TOUCHPAD (download)
VGA (download)
WIRELESS (download)

New 9" screen Asus EEE pc

We showed you quite a bit of the 9-inch Eee PC from ASUS yesterday, but they wouldn't let us turn it on. Now that CeBIT has officially begun, however, ASUS is lighting up those pixels loud and proud. ASUS tells us the screen is 1024 x 600, and it looks to be almost the exact same pixel density as the 7-inch version. The computer was being shown in both Linux and Windows XP versions, so it looks like you'll be able to have your choice of OS when the 9-incher is released later this year.
Source: Engadget

New Models for the Asus EEE pc bigger screens(7, 8 and 9 inch) and WIMAX

The lightweight and small Eee PC from Asus has been one of the
tech hits of the last 12 months and more than 350,000 machines have been sold in the past thee months.
It has won admirers for its four gigabyte solid state drive, small form factor and attractive price. You will need at least a 4 gig thumb drive for this to work. It is up to you if you would like to try this on your EEE but if you do you will need to use vlite to trim it down. Like most of the tutorials on this site it isn't exclusive to the EEE (this one isn't even recommended unless your technically inclined) and it will work on other PCs that meet the requirements for Windows Vista.

Insert your USB flash drive and enter the following commands:
(please note this list assumes that your usb flash drive will be seen as disk 1 to confirm that it is type "list disk" after you've entered the diskpart command)

diskpart
select disk 1
clean
create partition primary
select partition 1
active
format fs=fat32
assign
exit

The final preparation step is to copy the installation files to your flash drive, this can be done by running the following command:
(please note D: is the drive letter for the source files and E: is the drive letter for your flash drive if they are different on your system you need to change them accordingly)

xcopy d:\*.* /s/e/f e:\

Thats it, configure usb device as primary boot device in your bios and install.

Install Windows XP to SD or SDHC card Asus EEE pc

Installing Windows XP to a SD or SDHC card on Asus EEE pc

Tutorial written by CorvetteZ0606

You will need:

PC with DVD burner

External DVD reader

USB thumb drive ( I used a Corsair Flash Voyager 8GB)

Blank CD

SDHC card ( I used a Transcend TS8GSDHC6 8GB)

Eee pc

WinHex version 14.5 full version

Hitachi Microdrive Filter (can be downloaded from http://www.xpefiles.com//files/xpfildrvr1224_320.zip)

Nero (I used version 6)

BootExtract (freeware)

Cabsdk (Microsoft freeware)

Windows XP SP1 (I used my Virginia Tech Volume Licensing Disk.
21. Repack the files:
At the command prompt in the directory where you changed the files, type the following:

cabarc n USB.IN_ usb.inf
cabarc n USBPORT.IN_ usbport.inf
cabarc n USBSTOR.IN_ usbstor.inf

22. Delete the files:

usb.inf
usbport.inf
usbstor.inf

23. Move the following files back into your i386 directory for windows XP:

USBBOOT.INF
DOSNET.INF
TXTSETUP.SIF
USB.IN_
USBPORT.IN_
USBSTOR.IN_

24. You now can proceed in two ways. You can either continue here, or move to shrinking your new image with nlite. For the latter please refer to the nlite wiki page. Note that you need to skip step 5 in that guide and use the folder where you modified all these files. After running nlite and burning an image, continue at step 30.

25. Unpack your Bootextract software to a temp directory.
If you are a member of codeproject.com you can download it here

Use BootExtract to read the bootsector from your XPSP1 CD. Here’s the text from when I did it:

C:\BootExtract\Release>BootExtract.exe F:
CD/DVD-BootImage-Extractor v1.0 © Jochen Kalmbach
http://blog.kalmbachnet.de/

Reading boot-record-volume from sector 0×11
Valid boot-record-volume found…

Reading boot-catalog from sector 0×13
PlatformID: 80×86
ID-String: Microsoft Corporation

Processing Initial/Default-Entry…
Boot-Indicator: Bootable
Emulation: No emulation
Load segment: 0×0000
Sector count: 4 (2048 bytes)
Starting sector: 0×142
Writing 'Drive-F.NoEmulation_Segment-0000_SecCount-4.bin'

C:\BootExtract\Release>

26. Start up Nero, put your blank disk in, and start a new bootable CD project.

27. On the boot tab, select the file that bootextract made for your bootsector. Enable Expert settings. Set “Kind of Emulation” to “No emulation” set load segment of sectors to 0000. Set number of loaded sectors to 4. (note, these settings should match what Bootextract reported. If your XP CD gives you different info, then use that info.)

28. Add the files you have on your hard drive to the CD project.

29. Burn!

30. Ok, so now you have the xp install CD. Put it in your external CD reader and attach it to your Eee. Do not insert your SDHC card. Boot the CD. At BIOS start, hit the ESC button to get the boot menu. Select the DVD drive and let it boot into windows setup. If it fails to boot, you did something wrong on your XP CD.

31. Proceed with Installing XP onto the 4GB internal flash drive with a FAT32 partition. Make sure you delete all four linux partitions. Durring install you’ll see a lot of windows about unregistered drivers. Just hit continue anyways on all of these windows.

32. When windows boots for the first time, do not install any drivers or anything. First, you need to turn off the swap file, system restore, and the screensaver.

33. Then stick your USB thumb drive into the EEE with the following programs on it: Winhex installer, Hitachi Microdrive Filter.

34. Next copy the files from your thumb drive to the desktop and then properly remove the thumb drive.

35. Unzip the microdrive files to a folder on the desktop. And Insert your SDHC Card into the EEE.

36. You need to then Hit Start go to run, and type regedit. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Enum\USBSTOR\
Inside that you should find a directory called something like Disk&Ven_USB2.0&Prod_CardReader_SD0&Rev_0100. Open it. Inside that you should find another directory wich is just a bunch of numbers. Open it. In the right pane you should see a key called “Hardware ID” Right click on it, and select modify. It should list about 7 lines of text. Copy ONLY the first line to the clipboard. Hit cancel, close regedit.

37. Open cfadisk.inf in the directory you unzipped the microdrive filter to

   38. Edit the section called [cfadisk_device] so that rather than containing 11 lines, just have one line. The line begins with: %MicroDrive_devdesc% = cfadisk_install,
After the comma, hit ctrl V to paste what you coppied from the registry into the file.

39.Save the file.

40. Go to Device manager. Under disk drives, you should see SiliconMotion and USB2.0 Card Reader. Right click on the card reader and click update driver. Direct the driver updater window to the Hitachi driver you just edited. It won’t detect the driver automatically, you have to specifty that your supplying the disk for the hardware and force it to use the driver. After the driver is updated, you need to reboot.

41. After rebooting, Install Winhex on your Eee.

42. Open Winhex, go to the tools menu and select disk tools and then clone disk.

43. For the source media, select HD0 from under “Physical Media”. Note this is not selected by default. Select HD1 Usb card reader for the destination under “physical media” not logical drives.

44. Make sure Copy entire medium is checked. Select Simultaneous IO. Set Start sector to 0. Hit ok. It will give you a help screen for some reason. Hit close. And then hit ok in the clone disk window again. This process will take about 20 minutes. Make sure you move your mouse every few minutes so that windows doesn’t think there’s no activity. Do not use the computer AT ALL while this is running. Afterwards, close the application.

45. Set your windows background to something different so that you can tell that you’re booting to the internal SSD instead of the SDHC.

46. Reboot your computer, hit ESC at bios so that you can select to boot from the card reader.

47. When you boot, you should see windows with your old background. (IE, you’ve booted from the SDHC.)

48. At this point you have windows running on the SDHC. I assume that you can use a partition tool to recover the 4GB that you lost on your SDHC by doing this and also you should be able to restore your Linux to the SSD. I haven’t tried either yet.

Source: http://wiki.eeeuser.com/howto:installxp

Easy VPN for your Asus EEE pc using Hamachi

Access your shared home network files from anywhere you have an internet connection using the hamachi VPN software.

Using hamachi (thanks to Kermee at eeeuser forums for telling me about this program) you can access a network share on your home pc over the internet on your EEEpc.

First step is to download hamachi: https://secure.logmein.com/products/hamachi/list.asp

Then install it on both your home pc and your EEE pc

Now on your home pc open hamachi
Yes I know mine looks different just ignore that for right now and click the power icon in the lower left hand side.

Great now that it is online you need to click the triangle shaped icon on the right hand side and select "create a new network"
Enter a name for your network (something unique that you can remember) and a password. It is a very neat mod and uses space that is already open for the secondary mini pci-e card. There is some soldering involved but once this mod is complete you can add internal bluetooth and a 16GB flash drive. (or just about any usb device that will fit). This will increase your HD space on the EEE to 20 gigs!

Here is the article:

Hello,

I have completed my first Eee PC modification, this modification adds Bluetooth functionality and 16GB of flash storage.

At first I intended to solder the two USB devices directly to the motherboard but after careful consideration I decided the ability to easily replace the modules should take priority.

Both ports are 5V and use the USB connections from the unused Mini PCI Express port and the USB connections from the Mini PCI Express port used by the wireless card.

Thanks to everyone on this board who guided me along the way on my first Eee PC mod!

Parts Used:

30 AWG Wire
Lots of patience
2 * Surface mount USB ports
Microsoft Bluetooth Adapter
Healthy fear of turning your Eee into steaming pile of burnt PCB
Corsair Flash Voyager 16GB

Pictures: (you can click to download a high res version)

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; A few people have followed this tutorial and I haven't heard any reports of people having problems installing drivers or software afterwards so it's pretty safe to do. Completing this tutorial will shrink your XP installation down to 687mb from the usual 1.5 gigs.

You can click on the images to download a higher res version if you are having problems seeing them.

1. Download nLite from http://www.nliteos.com/download.html . I’m using version 1.4.

2. Download hotfixes from http://www.nliteos.com/addons/. I’m using “Xable's XP post SP2 lite update pack”. The direct download link is http://udp.xable.net/files/XUpdatePack_v3.0.3.7z .

3. Also you can find a lot of addons in http://www.nliteos.com/addons/. For more addons, you can find them from here http://www.winaddons.com/.

4. Install nLite.

5. Create a folder and copy XP installation files (everything) from CD to that folder.

6. Run nLite, in the welcome window, click Next to Locating the Windows installation window. Click Browse button to locate the folder that you created. Click Next, nLite will check the Windows version infomations.

7. Click Next to Preset window. In the first run, you don’t have any preset ini files. It will show empty here. Click Next.

8. In Task Selection window, select all except Service Pack and Drivers. Because we don’t have any service pack that newer than sp2. If you select driver, nLite can embed the drivers into XP installation. I think it is not good idea to add EEE drivers into XP installation, because we need run ACPI before install EEE drivers.

9. Click Next to Hotfixes, Addons and Update Packs window. Click insert to insert hotfixes and addons. I didn’t add Adobe Acrobat Reader, Windows Live Messenger and Divx addons, somehow these don’t work well for me.

10. You ONLY want to use the packages from the Asus update repositories. To do this: ctrl-alt-T, sudo kwrite /etc/apt/source.list. Put '#' (no quotes) in front of any repositories other than the Asus ones. Save and close. Then, sudo apt-get update.

Enabling to full desktop mode (KDE)

This method will get you the components needed for the 'full desktop', which is the K Desktop Environment (KDE). If you use this method, your desktop icons will disappear at each reboot. In order to maintain them, as well as improving booting speed, you need also to follow the instructions to " Boot directly into the mode last used": Easy Mode or Advanced Desktop Mode below.

Go to Settings → Personalization

Select “Full Desktop Mode” under Login Mode

Reboot.

You should now be in full desktop mode.

Other walkthroughs using this method

downloadsquad

Another simple way to boot into Advanced Mode (no double boot effect)

This way you will directly boot into KDE, with usb and samba shares fully working. All the changes are made in the user directory, so the side effects are reduced, and reversion is simple as an rm -f .xinitrc.

First open a terminal (by hitting Ctrl-Alt-t) and open the .xinitrc file in your home directory with your loved text editor (e.g. nano -w ~/.xinitrc), then paste this in :

.xinitrc:

#Needed to get automount working
xhost + si:localuser:root
sudo rm /tmp/nologin

#Needed to get the network working
sudo /opt/xandros/bin/start_netserv &

startkde

Save (Ctrl-O and Y with nano) and reboot.

Boot directly into the mode last used: Easy Mode or Advanced Desktop Mode

This method remembers which mode you were using the next time you start the computer. There have been multiple reports of wavy lines on the screen after this update and even some bricked EEEs. Your other options for getting it back up to 900mhz is waiting for a new more stable bios update or using SetFSB. SetFSB appears stable just setting the EEE to 900mhz with no major increase in temp. I would not advise going much higher than 900mhz as it may not be stable and it will generate more heat.

Instructions for overclocking via SetFSB:

1. Download SetFSB
http://www13.plala.or.jp/setfsb/downloa … 20b17w.zip

2. Select this FSB: ICS9LPRS906CGLF

3. Click on GET FSB

4. In the first tab, move it to the right until 400/802/266/33 appears in the box SELECT FSB (remember, it can be approx.)

5. I did it in Vista, with the following commands from a command prompt (with admin rights):

DISKPART
LIST DISK (note the number of your USB DRIVE at this point)
SELECT DISK 1 (or the appropriate number from the command above)
CLEAN
CREATE PARTITION PRIMARY
SELECT PARTITION 1
ACTIVE
FORMAT FS=32
ASSIGN
EXIT

- Copy contents of your newly created ISO to the stick (you can extract the ISO with Winrar, burn it to CD mount it with Daemon Tools etc. etc.)
- Insert USB stick into Eee
- Turn on Eee, pressing escape at startup to select the USB stick as the boot device
- Install Vista, configuring 1 single 4GB partition.
- You should now have Vista, but chances are there isn't much space left. Ensure your SD card is in the slot at this point, and showing as drive D:.
- You need to download PendMoves and MoveFile to your machine from http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysintern.../PendMoves.mspx. Put them in \Windows\System32

Right, now the clever stuff. The thing that stops Vista playing ball on the Eee is it's HUGE side by side directory, \Windows\winsxs. I mean huge... on my machine it was 1.5GB. The real problem is that it's huge AND very difficult to move. We're gonna put it on SD however

- Navigate to the \Windows\WinSXS directory, and view the security properties. You need to first give yourself ownership of the directory, and then give yourself full access (i'd use the administrator account to do this stuff).
- Now run a command prompt, and create a dummy directory. Type 'mkdir c:\windows\winsxs.moved'
- Now that's done, we're gonna create a junction (like a Symbolic link for Vista). Type 'mklink /J c:\windows\winsxs.link winsxs.moved'
- Good, now delete the winsxs.moved directory. Trust me on this one. Type 'rmdir c:\windows\winsxs.moved'

That's the preperation done. Now we need to use MoveFile to schedule renaming of the winsxs at reboot. This is the magic that will give us control over that nightmare directory.

- From the command prompt, run 'movefile c:\windows\winsxs c:\windows\winsxs.moved'. As you can see, this is renaming the winsxs directory before anything can get a hold on it.
- From the command prompt, run 'movefile c:\windows\winsxs.link c:\windows\winsxs'. This puts a winsxs directory back (as far as the OS is concerned), so everything doesn't collapse in a heap.
- Now type 'pendmoves'. It should show the 2 pending moves you've entered above, with NO ERRORS. If it all looks good, REBOOT!

On reboot the critical renames / moves will happen, and we'll be free of the shackles that stopped us messing with that pesky winsxs directory.

- When your PC is booted, again open a command prompt, and 'dir c:\windows\winsxs*'. If it's all gone well, you'll see a winsxs.moved real directory, and the winsxs junction. If it HASN'T worked, repeat the above steps!

If it's all good, then we're nearly home and dry. All we need to do is relocate WinSXS and amend the junction.

- Using Windows Explorer, COPY the whole winsxs.moved directory to a \Windows directory on your SD card. As it's HUGE, it'll take ages, and is often quicker using a USB card reader than the internal card reader.
- When this has finished, rename the directory on the SD card from winsxs.moved to winsxs. Go to a command prompt (again!) and type 'rmdir c:\windows\winsxs'. Then, type 'mklink /J c:\windows\winsxs d:\windows\winsxs'.
- To be sure everything is happy, in explorer browse to c:\windows\winsxs. You should see a ton of files. They're really on your SD card
- Reboot

After reboot, you should be able to delete c:\windows\winsxs.moved and FINALLY liberate all that disk space. Now you're at the point where you need to tweak your system. This means reducing / moving the page file, disabling hibernation and so on and so forth. To disable hibernation on Vista, drop to a command prompt and type 'powercfg -h off'.

There's one last thing you should do. When you download Windows Updates etc., the files get put into C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution, and this will quickly become huge. I recommend moving this to the SD too. It's easier though... stop Windows Update service, move directory, create junction, restart service, DONE!

It goes without saying that when you install apps (e.g. i'm gonna put Office 2007 on), you should install them to D:\Program Files - your SD - where appropriate!

Job done, you have Vista on your EEE

Source: http://www.modaco.com/content/Asus-EEE-PC-http-www-EEEasy-com/261965/Installing-Vista-on-the-Eee-ive-done-it-and-it-works/

Test drive the EEE pc default interface

This site allows you to click through the different menus inside the default linux installation on the EEEpc. (Puppy Linuxhas GUI Network Wizard that loads drivers through ndiswrapper.)

1. Go to a terminal as root.
2. Edit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist using your favorite editor (nano /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist)
3. Add the following lines:

    blacklist ath_pci
blacklist ath_hal

4. Restart the computer
5. To configure ndiswrapper, unzip the Windows drivers of your WiFi card somewhere (/home/jdoe/drivers in this example. The driver itself is usually).
6. Run: modprobe ndiswrapper
9.You also want to make sure ndiswrapper loads on startup. add ndiswrapper to /etc/modules

* (net5211.inf is avalible from the within the Asus EeePc 701 Support DVD Rev:1.1 at location: ”/Drivers/Wireless/ndis5x/net5211.inf”)

Source http://wiki.eeeuser.com

Enabling the Startmenu on the EEE (default OS)

This will show you how to enable to startmenu on the linux OS that ships on your EEE pc.

Remove the quotes when typing in the commands

Open a terminal window by pressing CTRL+ALT+T on your keyboard.

Inside the terminal window type "mkdir ~/.icewm" and press enter.

Inside the terminal window type "copy /etc/X11/icewm/preferences /home/user/.icewm" and press enter.

Inside the terminal window type "cd .icewm" and press enter.

Inside the terminal window type "nano preferences" and press enter.

Now you should be looking at the preferences file you copied at the beginning of this tutorial.

Using your cursor key (down arrow) navigate to the line that says "TaskBarShowStartMenu=0" and change the 0 to a 1. So go to Utilities in the menu bar and select Disk Utility (if you don’t have a working mouse yet, you can still access the menu bar from the keyboard). Once Disk Utility fires up, it’s time to format the drive. Here’s how:

Select your hard drive in the left sidebar.
Click on the tab labeled Partition.
Select a 1 partition Volume Scheme, name the volume Leopard, and choose Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as the format.
Last, click the Options button and choose Master Boot Record as the partition scheme.
Now that your drive is ready, so are you.

Install Leopard: This really is the easiest part—just follow the on-screen instructions and choose your newly created Leopard partition as the install destination. Then, before you make that final click on the Install button, click Customize and de-select Additional Fonts, Language Translations, and X11. These components were removed so we could fit everything on the patched DVD, so we won’t be installing them now.

That should be it, please keep in mind that all things do not work, if you really want OSX on your EEE you should some research before committing to it.

Some information was taken from Dan at uneasysilence.com

Installing Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon) via USB CD/DVD Drive

Installing Ubuntu on the Asus EEE pc.

Insert bootable CD into drive

Turn on Eee PC

Press F2 to get into the BIOS

Under the Advanced header, change OS Installation from Finished to Start

Under the Boot header, choose Boot Device Priority, and make it so your USB external drive boots before the HDD

Save and reboot

The Eee PC will then boot to your Live Ubuntu CD. Trackpad, mouse, keyboard, sound all work. It may have trouble recognizing the battery: I had it plugged into the AC Adapter and Ubuntu gave a warning message saying something like “There may be a problem with the battery, it is listed with only 1% left”

Begin the install- you will notice that all of the install windows drop below the screen. Windows can be moved around beyond the bounds of the screen by holding the Alt key and the left mouse button down, then moving the mouse. In the standard graphical installer, if Compiz (“visual effects”) is running (it is running in Ubuntu-live Gutsy by default), you won't be able to move the windows high enough with the Alt key, because they aren't allowed to pass the top edge of the screen. If you disable the visual effects (System>Preferences>Appearance>Visual Effects>None), you will now be able to move windows above the top edge of the screen in order to get at that all-important Next> button. It may be a better idea to use the alternative non-live install CD with the Eee PC.

When finished, remove CD and reboot

You now have Ubuntu installed

You should be able to install using a USB thumb drive instead of an external cd/dvd drive. Instructions on how to do this can be found in the Windows XP installation tutorial.

There are also some unresolved issues such as the wireless not working unless you use ndiswrapper and the battery levels not displaying properly. (alternative download)
Special Note: If you use the program Nlite be sure to keep the manual installation files as the USB_prep8 script relies on these files.

Extract the files in Bootsect.zip
The next step is to extract USB_prep8 and PeToUSB.
Next copy the PeToUSB executable into the USB_prep8 folder.
Inside of the USB_prep8 folder double click the executable named usb_prep8.cmd.

The window that opens will look like this:

These settings are preconfigured for you all you need to do now is click start.
Once the format is complete DO NOT close the window just leave everything as it is and open a command prompt from your start menu (type cmd in the search bar or run box depending on your version of windows.).

Inside of the command windows go to the directory you have bootsect.exe saved.
(use the cd directoryname command to switch folders)

Now type "bootsect.exe /nt52 R:" NOTE R: is the drive letter for my USB stick if yours is different you need to change it accordingly. What this part does is write the correct boot sector to your USB stick, this allows your PC to boot from the USB stick without it nothing works.
Please note: When running the bootsect.exe command you cannot have any windows open displaying the content of your USB stick, if you have a window open bootsect.exe will be unable to lock the drive and write the bootsector correctly.

If all went well you should see "Bootcode was successfully updated on all targeted volumes."

Now you can close this command prompt (don't close the usbprep8 one by mistake) and the petousb window.

You window you see now should look like this:

If it doesn't try pressing enter.

Now you need to enter the correct information for numbers 1-3.
Press 1 and then enter. A folder browse window will open for you to browse to the location of you XP setup files (aka your cdrom drive with xp cd in)
Press 2 and enter a letter not currently assigned to a drive on your PC
Press 3 and enter the drive letter of your USB stick
Press 4 to start the process.

The script will ask you if its ok to format drive T:. This is just a temp drive the program creates to cache the windows installation files. Press Y then enter.

Once it's done formating press enter to continue again, you can now see the program copying files to the temp drive it created. Once this is done press enter to continue again.

Next you will see a box pop up asking you to copy the files to USB drive yes/no you want to click yes.

Once the script has completed copy files a popup window asking if you would like to USB drive to be preferred boot drive U: select YES on this window.

Now select yes to unmount the virtual drive.

Ok we are done the hard part, close the usbprep8 window.

Now make sure your EEE pc is configured with USB as the primary boot device.
Insert your USB drive and boot up the EEE.

On the startup menu you have two options, select option number 2 for text mode setup.

From this point on it is just like any other windows XP installation delete/recreate the primary partition on your EEE pc and format it using NTFS. Make sure you delete ALL partitions and recreate a single partition or you will get the hal.dll error message.

Once the text mode portion of setup is complete it will boot into the GUI mode (you can press enter after the reboot if your too excited to wait the 30 seconds)

Once the GUI portion of setup is complete you will again have to boot into GUI mode this will complete the XP installation and you will end up at you XP desktop. It is very important that you DO NOT REMOVE THE USB STICK before this point.
